Developing My GAME Plan

After reviewing the National Education Standards for Teachers(NETS-T), there are two indicators that I have chosen to focus on and set goals in order to become a more effective teacher. The first standard I have chosen to incorporate into my GAME Plan is standard two.

NETS-T

2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to decelop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS-T:
a. degign or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity

Being a physical education teacher places some limits on incorporating different types of technological tools into lessons, but there are forms of technology available today that make it possible for me to incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning. My goals are to incorporate the use of technological tools into my physical education classes that hopefully will motivate all students and increase levels of participation in physical activity. The action that must be taken in order to reach this goal will require me to not only find what technology is available, but also to find ways to cover the expense of acquiring this technology. I believe there are two ways to monitor the progress toward achieving these goals. The first is to find possible grants or donors that can make it possible for technology to be purchased. The second way is by observing students once these certain tools are implemented. Evaluating whether these goals were achieved is probably the easiest of the four steps in the GAME Plan. Were technological tools implemented, and did levels of student participation increase?

The second standard I have chosen to focus on is standard 3.

3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in the global and digital society. Teachers:
a. demonstrate fluency in technological systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations

My objective for strengthening my confidence and proficiency for this standard is the same as that of standard two. The objective being to find ways to incorporate technology into physical education classes. My goal for this particular standard is to increase my knowledge of technology that is available for me to use with my students. The actions I will take to achieve this goal is to find other teachers who are implementing these types of technology in the same setting I would be. I will monitor my progress by the feedback received by those who are contacted about the effectiveness of using these tools and possible ways these tools can be acquired. Knowing it will not be easy to receive funds for technology (toys) for physical education classes, I will evaluate at the end of the year whether it can be possible to obtain funding for these technological tools, and determine how beneficial they actually are.

  2. Tracy,

Your action on standard two is on-point as not only is the technology that we can choose limited, so too is the time we have to use it, the space we have to work from and, most importantly, financial limitations to these opportunities. I feel like those that consider the budget, including administrators, look down on physical education as a glorified way to have a structured recess period, no matter the level. This is a stigma that needs to be eliminated but until it is I feel that we are facing a real uphill battle to gain more technological tools.

I have a question about the other standard you mentioned: when you plan on consulting other teachers are thinking of other phys ed teachers or classroom-type teachers? It would seem more reasonable talk with teachers of the same subject but perhaps classroom teachers have more of an experience with technology and can be a better guide to ideas that might be helpful. I guess asking teachers from both arenas would be the optimum technique.

    1. Rich,

I have to agree with your statement about the glorified structured recess period. I think that is definitely the case in some of the elementary schools. Hopefully, the economy will improve, and we will become financially able to purchase technology that we are able to use in a physical education setting.

To answer your question, I hope to communicate with other psycical education teachers about the different types of technology they are using. I feel that would be more beneficial than asking teachers from other subject areas because I would like to know what can and is being used in my specific subject area.

  3. Tracy,

I was wondering how big your district is? I happen to teach in one of the largest school districts in NYS so I do have the benefit of sharing equipment with PE teachers from other buildings. We are not in a financial position to have technological tools such as DDR in every building so our teachers have become accustomed to sharing any new equipment we do have. This has been a short term solution to help us through the budget crisis.

We have also discussed trying to put together some grant proposals for new exercise equipment. Our fitness center is full of stationary bikes and ellipticals that are either broken or need new battery support. I feel as if physical education is not a priority subject in terms of getting new technological resources for our students but we must still continue to search for ways to support our students. Obesity is not going away any time soon.

    1. Mike,

I teach in a very small, rural school district in Georgia. There is one high school, one middle school, and two elementary schools. Our financial situation is not very good either from the standpoint of being able to purchase new equipment. I think it's great that your schools cooperate enough to share equipment. Perhaps that could be a way we could get our system to purchase new types of technology.
